So yesterday I went to Dollar General, and they had several titles from Diamond Entertainment for $1 each. I only bought 3:
Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps
I already owned Gulliver's Travels on a PC Treasures DVD with The Little Princess. However, I knew immediately that this would be a good purchase simply because the film would be allowed to breathe on a disc by itself. I previewed the transfers on all 3 DVDs.
Gulliver's Travels is quite good. A bit scratchy, but the colors are fairly good, and it looks like it came from a film print, and not a murky VHS tape. It's also an improvement over my PC Treasures copy because not only does it contain the original Paramount pictures title card, which is missing from the PC Treasures DVD, but it even includes the theatrical trailer after the movie!
Royal Wedding was probably the best transfer in the bunch. A bit scratchy, the colors were a bit saturated, and it was fairly grainy. However, it's still very watchable.
The 30 Steps transfer isn't bad, but it's the worst of the bunch I bought. This obviously came from a VHS tape taped in SLP mode from a late night broadcast or something. A bit soft. However, it's still watchable.
I'm impressed with Diamond Entertainment's DVDs so far. They have fairly good picture quality and decent sound. They boast bonus materials like film trivia, photo galleries, and film info, which is more than most $1 DVDs offer. And for the most part, it seems like they at least TRY to get good copies of the films they release.
